| In a week that saw major league triple plays on two consecutive days, the minors have outdone the majors based purely on style points. This isn't exactly how Nashville Sounds center fielder Logan Scafer wanted to jumpstart a triple play, I'm sure, but it worked. After misjudging the line drive, Schafer zeroed in on it in deep center. The ball ended up hitting his glove and his head before he was able to make the catch. The two baserunners were so confused by it, the Sounds were able to turn it into a triple play. |

| Standard & Poors downgrade of the nations credit rating gives House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan every right to say I told you so. Even earlier this week when President Obama was taking his victory lap for the debt-ceiling compromise, Ryan was disclosing the cold, hard truths of the economic troubles that lie ahead truths that a jittery Wall Street has been more than aware of. In an oped column in Wednesdays Wall Street Journal, the Wisconsin Republican reiterated, of course, that the president really has no budget plan. The presidents February budget, he wrote, deliberately dodged the tough... |

The three-barrelled ejector, 16-bore gun, with three triggers, was designed by renowned Edinburgh gun makers... |

A fresh take on a classic experiment makes no progress in unifying quantum mechanics and relativity. If you ever want to get your head around the riddle that is quantum mechanics, look no further than the double-slit experiment. This shows, with perfect simplicity, how just watching a wave or a particle can change its behaviour. The idea is so unpalatable to physicists that they have spent decades trying to find new ways to test it. The latest such attempt, by physicists in Europe and Canada, used a three-slit version but quantum mechanics won out again. In the standard double-slit...

| US President Barack Obama has ordered a tripling of manpower in coastal areas where oil has washed ashore or threatens to within 24 hours. Speaking on a tour of oil-hit areas, Mr Obama said the US would "do whatever it takes" to help people whose lives had been affected by the disaster. He said the outcome of the "top kill" procedure to seal the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico was not yet known. But scientists were working on a back up plan in case it failed, he said. Earlier, BP's chief executive Tony Hayward said the outcome of... |
